October is Weatherization Month: Protecting Health, Safety, and Energy Efficiency at Home

October is Weatherization Month, a time to recognize the important role weatherization plays in creating safer, healthier, and more energy-efficient homes. As colder weather approaches, weatherization improvements can help families reduce energy costs, improve comfort, and address health and safety concerns that are common in many local homes.

Weatherization is more than just saving energy. It begins with identifying and correcting conditions that may affect the safety and well-being of household members. “Some of the most common issues found in homes throughout our area include gas leaks, incorrectly vented furnaces and hot water tanks, inadequate insulation, and uninsulated attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Left unaddressed, these conditions can contribute to poor indoor air quality, higher energy costs, moisture problems, and potential safety hazards,” notes Tina Kephart, Weatherization Director at Community Action, Inc.

Weatherization services often include comprehensive home assessments, health and safety inspections, air sealing, insulation upgrades, heating system improvements, and ventilation measures designed to create a healthier living environment. These improvements help reduce drafts, maintain comfortable indoor temperatures, and improve the overall performance of the home.

“Did you know? Insulating an attic or basement may do more to conserve energy and reduce heating and cooling costs than replacing older windows. While new windows can improve comfort and appearance, many homes lose a significant amount of energy through poorly insulated attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Addressing these areas often provides greater energy savings and a higher return on investment,” explained Ms. Kephart.

Proper insulation and air sealing can help prevent heat loss during the winter and keep homes cooler during the summer, reducing the strain on heating and cooling systems. Families often experience lower utility bills, improved comfort, and greater peace of mind knowing their homes are safer and more energy efficient.  “Homes should not naturally breathe; air intake should be controlled and calculated,” added Ms. Kephart.  “Letting air seep in through holes, cracks, or damp openings is not healthy; proper venting improves the air quality and energy efficiency of the home.”

Community Action, Inc. encourages residents to take advantage of opportunities to improve the health, safety, and energy efficiency of their homes. Even small improvements can make a meaningful difference, while comprehensive weatherization measures can provide lasting benefits for years to come.
