Community Action, Inc. Names Indiana County
Senior Corps-RSVP February Volunteers of the Month
Community Action, Inc. announced John and JoAnne Ferraro of New Florence were selected to be the Indiana County Senior Corps-RSVP Volunteers of the Month for February.

The Ferraros have been Senior Corps members since September 2001 volunteering for Aging Services, Inc.’s Pennsylvania Senior Environmental Corps (PASEC). PASEC volunteers test and monitor area waterways. The test results are entered into a database and used to generate graphic reports that volunteers use to determine the next, best steps for protecting and restoring streams. John collects and tests water samples. JoAnne is the program’s secretary and has many duties to include preparing the program's newsletter. In addition to volunteering for PASEC, the Ferraros volunteer for the Kiski-Conemaugh Stream Team where they perform water testing. JoAnne also volunteers for the American Red Cross Disaster Call Center, as well as knits and helps distribute mittens for Community Action, Inc.

When asked why they volunteer John stated, "It started out as just something to do after retiring, but then we got interested in it and found there is a need for it.” When asked what they enjoy the most about volunteering, JoAnne stated, “I like that we can see that the water is getting better; that this is not all in vain. We have met a lot of interesting people through our involvement.” To anyone interested in volunteering, the Ferraros say, “Pick something you have an interest in; something you can get excited about and pursue it.”

John is retired from Pennsylvania Electric and JoAnne is retired from the Accounts Receivable Department of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. They are the proud parents of one daughter and one granddaughter. When the Ferraros are not volunteering, they enjoy bicycling, hiking, geocaching and exercising. JoAnne also enjoys knitting. The Ferraros are members of Aultman Run Watershed Association, Blacklick Creek Watershed Association, Crooked Creek Watershed Association, Conemaugh Valley Conservancy, Evergreen Conservancy, Ken Sink Chapter of Trout Unlimited and Friends of the Parks. JoAnne currently serves on the board of directors for the Indiana County League of Women Voters.

Community Action, Inc.'s Senior Corps-RSVP is very proud to have the Ferraros as members. They depict the true spirit of volunteering and are dedicated to making a difference in people's lives.
