Free Income Tax Preparation Available in Jefferson County
|
Community Action, Inc. announced FREE income tax preparation and help determining eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is available to Jefferson County residents with income less than $49,000.
Tough economic times combined with escalating prices of energy, food and other basic necessities are making life very hard for working families. But there is a way to lighten the burden. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC is a refundable tax credit available to low-income, working families. This refund can be up to $5,600 in some circumstances! Yet, the IRS estimates one in four eligible taxpayers could miss out on this valuable tax credit.
Many people will qualify for the EITC for the first time this year because their income declined, their marital status changed or they added children to their families. Families with three or more children also get an extra boost with a larger tax credit this year. Anyone who earned $49,000 or less is encouraged to apply for EITC but they must file a federal income tax return.
To obtain FREE income tax preparation and help to determine EITC eligibility, contact Sheri Price, Senior Corps-RSVP Recruitment Specialist, at 1-800-648-3381, ext. 204. Tax preparation is available by appointment from IRS trained volunteers on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. during the period February 3 through April 14, 2010 at Community Action, Inc.'s office 200 East Mahoning Street in Punxsutawney.
